Why Do Certain Places Change Us?

Updated: 6 days ago

Why do certain places change us?

Why do some encounters arrive at exactly the right moment?

How can the same journey ask completely different questions of different people?

What creates the conditions for those moments we later call transformative?

I’ve been returning to these questions since 2015.

As an engineer by education and an event producer by profession, I found myself naturally drawn to experiences where place, culture, art, movement, nature and meaningful encounters came together in ways I couldn’t fully explain. Looking back, I realize I wasn’t searching for a new professional title, or better words to put on an event poster. I was trying to find language for something I had been witnessing for years but couldn’t quite name.

Over the years, I found myself returning to places that had quietly held people, stories and rituals for centuries and creating experiences in conversation with them.

In Konya, a whirling workshop took on a different kind of magic when experienced in the land where the tradition took root. It was a cultural immersion shaped not only by the practice itself, but by place and moment.

With Playing the Space, we created a series of improvised concerts in different locations. The musician responded to the acoustics and spirit of each space, creating a connection between music and place that existed only in that moment.

In Ephesus, we held retreats in a landscape that has been a meeting point for people, art and culture for thousands of years. Gathering there today felt like becoming part of a much older story of people coming together.

In Göcek, we spent days at sea, talking about the sea and its place in our lives, eating food from its waters, practicing yoga and watching the sunrise together.

And today, I continue exploring these questions through gatherings and journeys across Bali, where ritual is still woven into everyday life.

The places changed, the people changed, the form changed. But the question never did:

What creates the conditions for meaningful transformation?

This question continues to fascinate me, not because I believe transformation can be manufactured, but because I’ve spent years witnessing the conditions that seem to invite it. This relationship between place, people, experience and moment is also what continues to draw me to transformational travel. Some of these observations can be explained. Others remain beautifully mysterious.

I have no interest in standing at either extreme, neither in claiming that everything is energy, nor in dismissing everything that cannot yet be measured.

This journal lives somewhere in between;

It is a place for observation and curiosity, rather than certainty and conclusion. It is for personal stories and for field notes on meaningful travel.

I don’t write because I have the answers. I write because I keep encountering the same questions in different countries, through different people, in different forms.

Perhaps you’ll recognize some of them as your own.

Welcome.
